The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod has provided a Distance Education Leading Toward Ordination (DELTO) program for qualifying male candidates in special circumstances. The first ten of the thirty-course curriculum is delivered on the local level, and can be provided through the Mission Training Center. Candidates can apply to the seminary if they meet all of the following criteria:

  • They are recommended by their District President
  • They are serving in a church or mission field which requires their continued presence.
  • They meet the moral and spiritual criteria for pastors of the LCMS.
  • They must pass three competency tests in Basic Doctrine, Old Testament and New Testament.

Before the DELTO candidate can begin taking course # 11, provided by either LCMS Seminary, he must have satisfactorily completed the first ten courses on the local level. MTC provides these courses and will send an official transcript to the seminary at the request of the candidate.

Applications for DELTO can be obtained through the MTC office, as well as the Distance Edcation office at either Seminary. After filling out the application, it must be submitted by the candidate's local district. Arrangements to take the competency tests can be made through Dr. David Wollenberg's office at the St. Louis Seminary, or Dr. Douglas Rutt's office at the Ft. Wayne Seminary. MTC also hopes to begin offering these tests at the conclusion of each respective class.

Application to the DELTO program can be made at any time after the candidate has begun taking the first ten courses through the MTC. While MTC offers lay ministry certification and undergraduate academic credit, the DELTO student will be primarily interested in a DELTO transcript from MTC.
